Procedure

You can support the new IT policy controls for BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 or 4.2.1 without upgrading the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version. To do this, import the new BlackBerry smartphone IT policy rules using a method that is appropriate for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version you are using.

Method 1 - Import IT policy definitions file using BlackBerry Manager

This procedure applies to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 for Microsoft Exchange.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Download the IT policy definitions file and unzip the contents to a temporary folder.

Note: This script will add IT policies that may refer to features or services not contained in older versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

Warning: Do not edit the file. Importing a modified file might cause problems on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

  2. In BlackBerry Manager, right-click the BlackBerry Manager node and select Properties.
  3. On the Policy Rules tab, click Import Policy Definitions File.
  4. In the Open dialog box, navigate to the file you downloaded in step 1.
  5. Click Open. The import process starts.

When the import process completes, you receive the confirmation message Import of the IT Policy Template was successful.

Method 2 - Import IT policy definitions file using BlackBerry Manager

This procedure applies to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0.6 for IBM Lotus Domino and BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.1 Service Pack 2 (4.1.2) and 4.1.3 for all platforms.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Download the appropriate file and unzip the contents to a temporary folder.

Files for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0.6 for IBM Lotus Domino

Files for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.1.2 and 4.1.3

Note: This script will add IT policies that may refer to features or services not contained in older versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

Warning: Do not edit the file. Importing a modified file might cause problems on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

  2. In BlackBerry Manager, select BlackBerry Domain and click the Global tab.
  3. In the Tasks list, select Service Control and Customization.
  4. In the Open dialog box, navigate to the file you downloaded in step 1.
  5. Click Open. The import process starts.

When the import process completes, you receive the confirmation message The import of this IT Policy rule definitions file was successful. There were <x> additions and<y> updates.

Method 3 - Use the UpgradeITPolicyTemplate tool

This procedure applies to the following environments:

  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.1.0 and 4.1.1 (all platforms)
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 for IBM Lotus Domino
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 for Novell GroupWise

Complete the following steps:

  1. Close BlackBerry Manager.
  2. Download the appropriate files and unzip the contents to a temporary folder.

Files for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.1.0 and 4.1.1

Files for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.6

Note: This script will add IT policies that may refer to features or services not contained in older versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

  3. At a command prompt, navigate to the folder that contains the unzipped files.
  4. Run the UpgradeITPolicyTemplate tool, including necessary switches, as in the following example:

    UpgradeITPolicyTemplate<input_file> -db<BESMgmt>

where <input_file> is the name of the input file you unzipped in step 2 and <BESMgmt> is the name of the BlackBerry Configuration Database. For a list of the switches you can use with the UpgradeITPolicyTemplate tool, see the Additional Information section in this article.

  5. When prompted to execute the destructive action, type y and press ENTER.

Note: The tool automatically backs up the existing IT policy template table to a .csv file.

When the new IT policy definitions are imported, you receive the message Program completed successfully.

Method 4 - Use the insert42policies.sql file

This procedure applies to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6 for Microsoft Exchange.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Download the insert42policies.sql file and unzip the contents to a temporary folder.

Note:  This script will add IT policies that may refer to features or services not contained in older versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

  2. Make a backup of the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
  3. Download the appropriate file and unzip the contents to a temporary folder on the Microsoft® SQL Server™.
  4. At a command prompt, navigate to the folder that contains the unzipped files.
  5. Run the insert42policies.sql tool, including necessary switches, as in the following example:

    osql -E -n -d<BESMgmt> -i<input_file>

where <input_file> is the name of the input file you unzipped in step 2 and <BESMgmt> is the name of the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
