KB-000419: I just upgraded my Java and now my impaticized content converted with v360 and earlier will not playback. Is there a fix for this?

Note: This article does not apply to content produced with v3.6.4, 4.0.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 of Impatica for PowerPoint. The content in question must have been produced with v3.6.4 or earlier (e.g. 3.3.3) Impatica for PowerPoint software.

There is a known issue where playback of older impaticized content, using the previous beta version of Java, and this latest (January 14,2009) released version of Java 1.6.0_11-rc, does not work. The impaticized content will not play back. The Java Console produces these errors repeatedly:

There are several work around options available to you if you are experiencing this issue:

Option 1:

  1. Upgrade to Impatica for PowerPoint v3.6.4 (free upgrade from 3.3.3; paid upgrade from v2.x therefore see Option 2 below please) and reconvert all of your PowerPoint content.  Note: This option works on Windows only
    1. You can download version 3.6.4 from the archive section at the bottom of this page: http://www.impatica.com/products/imp4ppt/
    2. While the file is downloading, uninstall your older version of Impatica for PowerPoint from the Windows Control Panel.

                                                              i.      If you are an OnCue user as well, you will need to retain v3.3.3 of Impatica for PowerPoint for use with OnCue (OnCue content has not been affected by this Java release). You will either need to uninstall and reinstall each version as required or use a different computer for each type of production. If needed, the installer for Impatica for PowerPoint v3.3.3 is located here: http://www.impatica.com/downloads/imp4ppt/333/installer/setupppt.exe

    1. Once you have the file downloaded and the older version has been uninstalled, run the setupppt364b.exe file to install the software.
    2. Your previous version 3 registration information and settings will have been retained and automatically applied to the new version.
    3. Convert the affected PowerPoint files again and upload to overwrite the old content.
    4. Test to be certain it is playing back properly.

Option 2:

  1. Upgrade to the current release of Impatica for PowerPoint (at the time of writing the current version 4 release is v4.0.2 for Windows, v4.0.1 on the Mac) (v4.X is a paid upgrade from version 2.x and 3.x) and convert and upload all of your PowerPoint content.
    1. Contact sales@impatica.com to arrange for an upgrade purchase. This will result in you being sent new version 4 registration information.
    2. Once you have your version 4 registration information, you can download the latest version from this page: http://www.impatica.com/products/imp4ppt/
    3. While the file is downloading, uninstall your older version of Impatica for PowerPoint from the Windows Control Panel.

                                                              i.      If you are an OnCue user as well, you will need to retain v3.3.3 of Impatica for PowerPoint for use with OnCue (OnCue has not been affected by this Java release). You can have both version 3.3.3 and 4.X of Impatica for PowerPoint on the same computer. If needed, the installer for Impatica for PowerPoint v3.3.3 is on this page: http://www.impatica.com/downloads/imp4ppt/333/installer/setupppt.exe

    1. Once you have the file downloaded and the older version has been uninstalled, run the setupppt.exe file to install the software.
    2. Register the new software with the version 4 registration information you were sent by Impatica Sales.
    3. Convert the affected PowerPoint files again and upload to overwrite the old content.
    4. Test to be certain it is playing back properly.

Option 3:

  1. Replace the Impatica player, and all references to it in the associated HTML pages, to the v3.6.4 player.
    1. NOTE: This is not the recommended method to use. This is neither a tested nor supported method. We mention it here as an extreme last measure for situations where there is no other option – e.g. the source PowerPoint file for a presentation is no longer available.
    2. Steps:

                                                              i.      Download and save the regular v3.6.4 player from:

1.      http://www.impatica.com/downloads/imp4ppt/364b/ImPlayer364.jar

                                                            ii.      Download and save the video v3.6.4 player from:

1.      http://www.impatica.com/downloads/imp4ppt/364b/ImPlayer364-Video.jar

                                                          iii.      Place the player files in the same folders (directories), on your web server, where the version 3.3.3 files now exist.

                                                           iv.      Download the HTML pages for each presentation in that folder.

                                                             v.      Open the HTML file in either an HTML editor or in a simple text editor, e.g. TextPad or Notepad.

                                                           vi.      Find and replace all instances of 333 with 364. For example, a sample applet code would look like:

      <APPLET CODE = "com.impatica.v333.ImPlayerConsole.class"

        ARCHIVE = "ImPlayer333-Video.jar" WIDTH = "239" HEIGHT = "199">

        <PARAM NAME = "ARCHIVE" VALUE = "ImPlayer333-Video.jar">

        <PARAM NAME = "COLOR0" VALUE = "000066">

        <PARAM NAME = "COLOR1" VALUE = "CCCCFF">

        <PARAM NAME = "BGCOLOR" VALUE = "FFFFFF">

        <PARAM NAME = "FILE" VALUE = "Sharks3-D-imp.jar">

      </APPLET>

Replace all 333 occurrences with 364 and it will now read:

      <APPLET CODE = "com.impatica.v364.ImPlayerConsole.class"

        ARCHIVE = "ImPlayer364-Video.jar" WIDTH = "239" HEIGHT = "199">

        <PARAM NAME = "ARCHIVE" VALUE = "ImPlayer364-Video.jar">

        <PARAM NAME = "COLOR0" VALUE = "000066">

        <PARAM NAME = "COLOR1" VALUE = "CCCCFF">

        <PARAM NAME = "BGCOLOR" VALUE = "FFFFFF">

        <PARAM NAME = "FILE" VALUE = "Sharks3-D-imp.jar">

      </APPLET>

                                                         vii.      Save the file with the same original name; ensure that it has an HTML and not a TXT file extension.

                                                       viii.      Upload and overwrite the original HTML file on the web server.

                                                           ix.      Test to be certain it plays back correctly.
