KB-000286: Is there a way that I can install Impatica for PowerPoint on a computer used by multiple users?

Impatica for PowerPoint does not currently have a method that would allow for installation on one or many computers for multiple users. We have developed a workaround that would allow multiple users of the same computer to use one installed version of Impatica for PowerPoint. This is particularly useful for workstations in a lab environment that are commonly shared by many users.

The workaround involves running a batch file that copies the preferences file of an installed instance of Impatica for PowerPoint. Since Impatica for PowerPoint uses a preference file created in the "Documents and Settings" area for the user who installed the software, a new user logging into the computer is not recognized by Impatica for PowerPoint. The application will ask the user to register the software.

The master prefs file would be the imp4ppt.prefs file belonging to a user that registered Impatica for PowerPoint.  The location of the file is as follows:

Windows XP/2000:

Impatica for PowerPoint version 3:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Impatica\Impatica for PowerPoint\3\imp4ppt.prefs

Impatica for PowerPoint version 4:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Impatica\Impatica for PowerPoint\4\imp4ppt.prefs

Windows Vista:

Impatica for PowerPoint version 3:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Impatica\Impatica for PowerPoint\3\imp4ppt.prefs

Impatica for PowerPoint version 4:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Impatica\Impatica for PowerPoint\4\imp4ppt.prefs

For each of the above paths, <user> would be the username that was used to register the software i.e. the user that was logged in when the software was installed and registered.

To use the batch file, the lab admin must do the following:

1. Modify the batch file. The "masterfile" variable must be set to the path where the master prefs file is located on every lab machine.

2. Modify the version variable to be the "major version" number of the version of Impatica for PowerPoint that is being installed (i.e. 4.0.2 = 4
)

3. Modify the path 'fullpath' variable to be appropriate for your version of Windows.

NOTE: In the attached bat file, the Windows truncated values are indicated for the "local settings" and "application data" values in the "fullpath" variable:
%USERPROFILE%\local settings\application data\%company%\%product%\%version%. The truncated values work in most environments, but if they do not work for you, please try them written out in full as ishown above.

XP / 2000:

%USERPROFILE%\locals~1\applic~1\%company%\%product%\%version%

Vista:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\%company%\%product%\%version%

3. Copy the batch file to every machine in the lab.

4. Copy a "Master prefs" file to every machine in the lab to the path set in step #1.

5. Somehow have this batch file run every time a user logs onto a lab machine. One way would be to put this batch file in the "startup" folder of the "all users" start menu: C:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\Startup
